Description :
  • Bass Drum. Black painted wooden hell decorated with gold and red lines and the words Market Lavington Prize Silver Band on a scroll design. White plaited ropework and white leather tensioning tabs. Slight damage to one drum skin. Other skin badly torn, revealing maker's labels inside – reading "HAWKES AND SON, MANUFACTURERS OF MILITARY AND ORCHESTRAL DRUMS IN WOOD, BRASS,COPPER AND SILVER TO HIS MAJESTY'S ARMY, NAVY AND VOLUNTEERS. EVERY DRUM IS MADE THROUGHOUT ON THE PREMISES AND GUARANTEED PERFECT. 34 INCH HEADS REQUIRED FOR THIS DRUM. NOTE if the head of this drum breaks, send the head hoop only to Messrs Hawkes and Son with the list price for a head six inches larger than the diameter of this drum, together with 3s extra for tapping. The same will be returned within two days and can be fitted again to the drum by just damping the outside of the new head slightly. 14/3/? * HAWKES AND SON 7003 DENMAN STREET, PICCADILLY CIRCUS, LONDON" (* The date is handwritten and the year is unclear – 30,80,90? However His Majesty makes 80 or 90 unlikely. Also drum looks new in a 1931 photo. Previous photos show a different drum. Hawkes and Son existed from 1865 until 1930, when they combined with Boosey & Co to form Boosey & Hawkes. (Therefore, best guess for date is 1930.). The drum passed to Bratton Silver Band at some point. It was given to Market Lavington Museum in 2010.
