Legal Aspects
All museum partners retain copyright on any digital content aggregated by MIMO.
Digital images submitted to MIMO should be JPEG, 24 (3x8) bit colour/8bit greyscale, with the length of the longest side of the image being 800 pixels. This will ensure reasonable online quality but is not suitable for print, thereby offering a degree of protection to the providing museum. Users requiring access to higher quality images or full length audio and video will be able to do so via each holding institution’s regular channels.
Similar restrictions are applied to audio and video files, with both limited to 30 second clips.
As examples, they will have the function of a citation rather than of a copyrighted work. All museum partners will deliver only audio and video files on which they retain either full copyright or have arranged an agreement with another concerned party. (Full details are given in the MIMO Digitisation Standard).
For museums whose content will be harvested by Europeana, metadata and thumbnail images are currently given without restriction, under the terms of the Europeana Data Exchange Agreement. All museums contributing to Europeana via MIMO will be bound by the terms of this agreement.
An explanation of the thinking behind this agreement is contained in the document: - Towards New Data Provider and Aggregator Agreements
